In response to the devastating earthquake in Haiti, especially its capital, Port au' Prince, a non-profit charity organization named "Hands 4 Others" is showing its support by providing a water system for the victims. Their partner, Water Missions International has full-time staff on the ground in Port-au-Prince and are poised to respond as quickly as possible to the survivors of the quake. All donations from the fundraiser are going toward the Hands 4 Others organization, and will provide any necessary supplies and provisions to save the lives of the affected 2.2 million Haitians.

Think back to the arrival of the year 2000. Fears of a Y2K computer meltdown had just faded, Bill Clinton was turning over the White House to George W. Bush and the twin towers still stood on the New York City skyline.

Locally, the economy was expanding, fueled by what looked like an unstoppable housing boom. With scores of new residents, school enrollment was soaring and property taxes were plentiful to meet the growing needs. How times have changed.

In just 10 years everything is different from the size of government budgets to the cost of gas. The demographics of South Bay have changed too. Who lives here, what businesses are open and the kinds of jobs available are all different. Along with these changes, the needs of our community have also shifted.

That’s why it’s time to stop and be counted.

At the start of each new decade, our nation takes a census to get as clear a picture as possible of how many people are living in the United States. This becomes the nation’s official population count. Census data is used to direct funds for public services and resources.

Lawmakers decide where to build new schools, libraries and hospitals and roads based on the census. How much federal money is awarded to our cities depends on the census. Each year, the federal government distributes more than $300 billion in federal funds to cities and states, according to the census.

The census is also used to reapportion seats in the U.S. House of Representatives and redistricting of seats in state and local government. Being counted makes a difference in how your interests are represented.

Because the public resources to meet the needs of you and your family depend on an accurate census, it’s extremely important that every single person living in our community is counted.

Leaving some people out of the census means a potential loss of dollars for our schools and community.

In recent years, the Sweetwater District didn’t qualify to apply for several federal grants because existing census data does not accurately reflect the needs of the population we serve. Faulty census data has denied the district the chance to receive tens of thousands of dollars in grant funding for school libraries, teaching training and student counseling services, to name just a few missed opportunities.

We need everyone to be counted in the 2010 census so that our children receive every opportunity for funding that is available.

In March, all households will receive questionnaires. It should take about 10 minutes to mark your answers to 10 simple questions about the people living at your address.

Be sure to count all members of your household—both citizens and non-citizens as well as relatives and non-relatives living at the same address.

It’s natural to worry about protecting your personal information. But, by law, the Census Bureau must keep your answers confidential and cannot share your information with other government agencies. The data is collected only to produce statistics. Your answers cannot be used against you in court or by law enforcement.

As individuals, it can be hard to make a difference. The census provides a great opportunity for each of us to influence decisions made at every level of government. I urge you to be counted in 2010 and help ensure that our schools and community get their fair share.

11th grade students who are eligible for Compact for Success, based on their grade point average, will be invited to attend the Compact for Success Assembly on Friday, March 12, 2010. Students will receive a notice in the mail as well as a courtesy notice the week of the assembly. Eligible students are invited to report to the gymnasium at the end of period 1. The assembly will begin at 8:40 a.m.

iCrew Photo Lynn Garcia has been an integral part of Hilltop athletics since the early 1980s, coaching field hockey, water polo, swimming and soccer. She has coached field hockey at Hilltop since 1993.

Hilltop Field Hockey Coach Lynn Garcia has been named 2009 West Sectional Field Hockey Coach of the Year by the National Federation of State High School Associations(HFHS). The West Section includesthe states of Arizona, California, Hawaii, Nevada and Utah. The NFHS Coaches Association is the official national coaches association of the National Federation of State High School Associations.

According to Robert F. Kanaby, Executive Director, "Your contributions to high school athletics are truly deserving of our recognition and thanks. Congratulationos on being selected to represent all of those deserving coaches in your section."

Hilltop advanced to face Torrey Pines in the Hilltop Basketball Tournament Finals after a 50-40 win over Westview in the Semi-Final. In the other Semi-final Torrey Pines defeated Helix 80-70.

Fridays photos include El Cajon Valley and Chula Vista along with Hilltop-Torrey Pines

Hilltop Middle School will be hosting a H1N1 Clinic on Monday, December 14th from 4-8 pm in the HIlltop Middle School cafeteria. Hilltop High students are invited to participate in this event.

Supplies of the vaccine are limited; therefore, the vaccine will only be available to students up to age 24 and their siblings who are under the age of 18, as well as pregnant women. Minors will need to have a signed parental consent form in order to receive the vaccination. Consent forms as well as information sheets regarding the vaccine are available on-line.

Additional consents and information sheets can be obtained at Hilltop HIgh's main office or with the school nurse, Lynette Matheny.

In a match that marked the opening basketball game of the season for the Hilltop Lancers and the Monte Vista Monarchs, Hilltop had an opening 9-0 run holding the Monarchs scoreless until 4:26 into the game. Junior Forward Carlos Perez led the Lancers (1-0) with 18 points in the 53-48 win over the Monte Vista Monarchs (0-1).

Monte Vista Sophomore Forward Kylie Luster received the first foul of the game against Carlos Perez, giving him two free throws and the Lancers a 10-2 lead. Teammate Anthony Rodriguez passed the ball to Andre Harris for an assist 2 pointer with one second on the clock. The Lancers maintained their lead ending the first period 16-4 Lancers.

The second period started with a player control foul on Kylie Luster against Carlos Perez giving him his second foul of the game. The Monarchs caught a break with four consecutive fouls by the lancers; Anthony Rodriguez, Andre Harris, Anthony Edwards and Carlos Perez, bringing the score to 28-20 by the end of the period.

The Lancers started out the third period with two assists from Anthony Edwards to Jacob Craig with a second rebound offensive and a back door. Lancers then continued to receive four more fouls by Carlos Perez, Ryan Boudreau, Jacob Craig, and Anthony Harrington leaving the score at 40-32. After a 30 second time out by the Monarchs, Anthony Edwards delivered two consecutive assists to Anthony Harrington for a score of 49-43. Monarchs Sophomore Guard Ruben Nwando shot a 3 pointer while receiving a foul from Anthony Edwards leaving the final score at 53-48 Lancers win.

The Lancers managed to hold their lead over the Monarchs winning by 5 points. It’s unfortunate this sense of victory did not last long. On Saturday the Hilltop Lancers lost to the Helix Highlanders in a close game of 43-41. The Lancers will return to action Tuesday, in a bracket game, as the 2009 Hilltop Basketball Tournament continues.

Kaitlin Mayall was named to the All-CIF Division I 1st team last night. She was also named to the All-County CIF 2nd team. These are great accomplishments as there are only 11 spots on each team and Kaitlin was recognized by county coaches for her strong midfield play. Lynn

Senior Jordan Akers was named to the HSSA Senior Field Hockey All-Star team. The award was presented to seniors for their athleticism. sportsmanship and leadership over their high school careers. The San Diego County High School Sports Association sponsor many events for high school athletes including Football , Softball, and Volleyball senior all-star games plus breakfasts, banquets and other award presentations. Jordan received her award at the Field Hockey finals at a ceremony between the Division I & II final games. Congratulations Jordan!!

Student Workshops for 11th Grade SUHSD Students:
WHAT TO EXPECT ON THE SAT and ACT

To qualify for admission to a four-year college or university, students must take an SAT or ACT. It is recommended they take the test during the spring semester of 11th grade. We strongly encourage students to participate in a preparation workshop to prepare them to take these important exams.

Target Audience: Students in the Class of 2011 (juniors). Parents are welcome, but not required to attend.

Items to be Covered in either Informational Session (1/14 or 1/23): the difference between the SAT and the ACT and which will suit each student better; which colleges require the SAT Subject Tests in addition to the SAT/ACT and what subjects are offered; how the tests are structured and scored; tips and strategies for performing well; how to prepare for the ESSAY. The two Informational Sessions will be identical so you should only attend one.

Items to be Covered on Saturday, 1/30/10: ACT sample problems and preparation.

Items to be Covered on Saturday, 2/6/10: SAT sample problems and preparation.

Reminder: You can register online or by mail to take the SAT or ACT. Most colleges accept either test or will take your higher score if you take both. You must pay with credit card, check/money order, or fee waiver. See a high school counselor for a fee waiver. Most students take a test during spring of the junior year and/or fall of the senior year. It is recommended that you plan to take the test (s) during April – June. Do not forget to register for the test on time.
